Which option suits how much data?

Under a few terabytes, a consumer drive paid in crypto is enough. From 24 TB up, a storage server fits better, and you run your own tools on it. In between sit S3 buckets and block storage.

  • Photos and documents, a few TB: Proton or Internxt. You get apps for phones and desktops, not a server.
  • Backups to an S3 bucket: Storj takes USDC, and restic or rclone can write to it.
  • Extra disk for a VPS you already rent: BuyVM slabs, up to 10 TB each.
  • 24 TB and more, or tools that need SSH: a storage server. Borg, rsync, ZFS replication and Proxmox Backup Server run on it.

The line between a big virtual disk and a whole server is drawn in Storage VPS or storage dedicated server: which one should I rent? What each service charges at 100 TB, crypto or not, is in How much does it cost to store 100 TB in the cloud?

How do storage-server hosts handle crypto and ID?

Crypto is common among storage-server sellers; crypto without any ID check is not. Of 23 storage-server sellers Basalthold checked on 2 November 2026, 16 took crypto, 6 took Monero and 0 took Bitcoin Lightning.

On identity, 3 asked for none, 12 reserved the right to ask in some cases, and 2 required ID before delivery. The other 6 did not say. Five sellers use Cryptomus for crypto, alone or next to other processors. Its operator, XELTOX ENTERPRISES LTD, which also runs Heleket, was placed under UK sanctions on 8 October 2026.

At Basalthold: No KYC: no ID, no selfie, no documents, no card and no phone number, at any point. Signing in takes only an account number; an email address is optional. Incoming payments are checked against public sanctions lists of blockchain addresses; a payment from a listed address is not credited.

Does paying in crypto keep my files private?

No, not by itself. Crypto keeps a card and a billing name out of the account. It does nothing for the files you upload. A provider that holds your keys can still read them.

Encrypt before the data leaves your machine. Then the host stores ciphertext, whoever it is and however you paid. How that works in backup tools is explained in What is client-side encryption for backups?

On a hold: You can encrypt every data drive with LUKS or ZFS native encryption; the keys stay with you and nobody on the team ever asks for them. No logs are kept: no connection records, no traffic records and no visitor or customer IP addresses, on the website, in the dashboard or on the servers.

How do I pay for a Basalthold hold in crypto?

Three moves: an account number instead of a sign-up form, a transfer from your wallet, then the hold itself. Prices per hold and per term sit on the pricing page.

  1. Top up $25 or more

Choose the amount and the coin (BTC, USDT, USDC, ETH, SOL, LTC). The crypto amount and its rate are locked for 30 minutes.

  2. Send it to the address shown, on the exact network

The payment page shows our deposit address for the coin and network you picked: BTC on Bitcoin, USDT on Tron (TRC-20) or Ethereum (ERC-20), USDC on Ethereum (ERC-20), ETH on Ethereum, SOL on Solana, LTC on Litecoin. Send only that coin on that network: funds sent on another network or in another coin can’t be recovered. The network fee comes on top of the amount.

  3. Send the exact amount shown, then click “I’ve sent the payment”

Each top-up has its own exact amount (down to the last decimals): that is how we find your payment and link it to your account.

  4. Credited once your payment is checked on the blockchain

Your balance is credited once we have checked the transaction on the blockchain, after the network has confirmed it. Typical network confirmation times:

    CryptoNetworkConfirmationsUsual time
    BTCBitcoin2≈ 20 min
    USDTTron (TRC-20)20≈ 1 min
    USDTEthereum (ERC-20)12≈ 5 min
    USDCEthereum (ERC-20)12≈ 5 min
    ETHEthereum12≈ 5 min
    SOLSolana1≈ 1 min
    LTCLitecoin6≈ 15 min
  5. Rent your hold

Pick a hold, a term, a city, a system and your SSH key (or none, for a temporary root password); the top-up follows the price of that term. Once the payment is confirmed, a person prepares your server within 72 hours and its IP address appears in the dashboard. Credit on your balance does not expire and renews any of your servers. When a top-up is only made to reach the minimum, the unspent part comes back on request within 30 days of payment, in USDT or USDC. The rest of a balance is not paid out unless the law requires it.

Closed the tab? The pending top-up stays under Billing in your account: open it to see the address and the exact amount again.
