Medians per raw terabyte by capacity, the cheapest servers listed anywhere, what RAID takes off, and how Hetzner, Backblaze B2 and Wasabi compare.

**Quick answer — How much does a rented storage server cost per TB per month?**

On 2 November 2026, a rented storage server of 16 TB+ cost a median $9.50 per raw TB per month at no-KYC crypto hosts. From 144 TB, the median fell to $4.68. Across every listed plan, crypto or not, it was $5.12. **Basalthold** Hold 160 costs $3.50/TB raw, paid in crypto with no KYC.

## What does a raw terabyte cost at each capacity?

**The bigger the server, the cheaper the terabyte.** At crypto hosts that ask for no ID, the median fell by half between 16 TB and 144 TB. One more filter thins that pool: of 13 plans that passed every other test, 10 ran a processor launched before 2018.

*Monthly price ÷ raw hard-drive TB, setup fees spread over twelve months. No-KYC crypto hosts: 5 hosts paid in crypto with no ID check. Their plans are billed monthly and in stock, with an IPv4 address, a port of 1 Gbit/s or faster and a monthly allowance of 10 TB or more. All listed: every bare-metal plan of the 23 sellers, any stock or payment. 1 EUR = 1.1172 USD (ECB, 2026-10-30).*

## How many raw terabytes are usable after RAID?

**Usable space is raw space minus the drives that hold copies or parity.** RAID 6 survives two failed drives and keeps (n − 2) of n drives for data. A mirror keeps one drive in two. OpenZFS gives RAIDZ the same rule, (N − P) × X, and calls it approximate: small records cost extra parity.

Divide the raw price per TB by the usable share to get the price of a usable TB. These are calculations from drive counts, not measurements:

| Layout | Drives that may fail | Hold 24 (2 drives) | Hold 40 (4 drives) | Hold 100 (10 drives) | Hold 160 (10 drives) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Mirror or RAID 10 | 1 per pair | 12 TB, raw price × 2 | 20 TB, × 2 | 50 TB, × 2 | 80 TB, × 2 |
| RAIDZ1 or RAID 5 | 1 | — | 30 TB, × 1.33 | 90 TB, × 1.11 | 144 TB, × 1.11 |
| RAIDZ2 or RAID 6 | 2 | Needs 4 drives | 20 TB, × 2 | 80 TB, × 1.25 | 128 TB, × 1.25 |
| RAIDZ3 | 3 | — | — | 70 TB, × 1.43 | 112 TB, × 1.43 |

Decimal TB before file-system overhead. Tools such as `zfs list` show tebibytes: 128 TB is about 116.4 TiB.

**On ten drives in RAIDZ2, a usable terabyte costs 1.25 times the raw price.** Hold 160 at $3.50/TB raw stays below Backblaze B2's $6.95 per usable TB after that markup. On a two-drive server, a mirror doubles the price of each usable TB. Mirrors against parity is the subject of [RAID 6 or RAID 10: which is better for a rented storage server?](https://basalthold.com/raid-6-vs-raid-10/ "Parity against mirrors on large hard drives")

## How do the holds compare with their reference servers?

Each hold is priced 25% under a named like-for-like server: same raw capacity, cores and memory, from a crypto host that asks for no ID. At 100 TB and 160 TB that host is the only one: 1 host, OffshoreDedi. The full rule is on the [pricing page](https://basalthold.com/pricing/ "Holds, terms and the price rule").

## What are the cheapest storage servers listed anywhere?

**The lowest prices per TB come from sellers that do not say they take crypto.** NetDynamics24 listed $1.30 per raw TB, the lowest of the study. Hetzner and OVHcloud follow, and neither takes crypto. The cheapest server a crypto buyer could rent without ID was OffshoreDedi's 160 TB.

On LowEndTalk in 2024, NetDynamics24 answered "No we don't" to a question about crypto. A forum reply says its storage servers are GorillaServers hardware; that is not verified.

## What do storage boxes, block storage, B2 and Wasabi cost per TB?

These are not servers, and most of them price usable space with redundancy included. Compare them with a hold's usable price, not its raw price. Of the options sold as usable space, a Hetzner Storage Box is the cheapest per TB, but it stops at 20 TB a box. Its rivals are lined up in [Hetzner Storage Box and SX alternatives](https://basalthold.com/hetzner-storage-box-alternative/ "Storage Box and SX alternatives, with crypto and ID columns").

*Official price pages read on 2 November 2026. Hetzner prices exclude VAT; 1 EUR = 1.1172 USD (ECB, 2026-10-30).*

| Option | Per TB a month | What the TB is | Crypto | Limits |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Hetzner Server Auction (cheapest per TB) | $1.72 | Raw disk on a whole server | No | Stock changes daily; price falls over time |
| Hetzner Storage Box BX11 to BX41 | $2.27 to $3.58 | Usable network storage | No | 1 to 20 TB per box |
| BuyVM Block Storage Slab | $5.00 | Usable block device | Yes | Up to 10 TB, attached to a BuyVM VPS |
| Backblaze B2 | $6.95 | Usable object storage | No | Egress free up to 3× stored, then $0.01/GB |
| Wasabi Hot Cloud Storage | $7.99 | Usable object storage | No | 90-day minimum; 1 TB minimum charge |
| Basalthold Hold 160 | $3.50/TB | Raw disk on a whole server | Yes | 160 TB raw; 200 TB per 30 days |

## Can I rent a storage server for $1 to $1.50 per TB?

**Not with crypto, not on 2 November 2026.** On LowEndTalk, buyers who pay in crypto post budgets of $1 to $1.50 per TB for 150 TB and more. No plan that took crypto without ID came near it. The lowest such plan cost $4.68/TB raw, and Hold 160 costs $3.50/TB.

The sellers who answered those threads asked $340 to $350 a month for 144 TB raw, about $2.36 to $2.43 per TB. Another asked €569 for 216 TB, about $2.94. One forum regular summed it up: "the days of 1-1.5$ per TB is gone".

Prices under $1.50 do exist, at sellers that state no crypto: NetDynamics24 at $1.30. Hetzner auction boxes come close at $1.72, paid by card or bank.

## What else changes the price of a terabyte?

The monthly figure is only part of the bill. Check five things before you compare:

- **Setup fees:** Hetzner charges €134 to €439 once on its SX line; OVHcloud's KS-STOR, one month. No setup fee is charged, neither on the first order nor on a renewal.
- **Extra addresses:** a Hetzner auction server bills its IPv4 at €1.70 a month.
- **Port speed:** OVHcloud's KS-STOR has a 500 Mbit/s port, half of 1 Gbit/s.
- **Traffic:** at full speed, a 1 Gbit/s link carries about 10.8 TB a day, so filling 160 TB takes about 15 days.
- **VAT:** Hetzner and OVHcloud quote prices before VAT.

The drive type matters too. Hard drives win on price per TB; SSDs win on random reads, as [HDD or SSD: which is better for a rented storage server?](https://basalthold.com/hdd-vs-ssd-storage-server/ "Hard drives and SSDs on a storage server") explains.

## What else do people ask about storage prices per TB?

### What is the cheapest storage server per TB?

NetDynamics24, at $1.30 per raw TB, states no crypto or ID rule. Among crypto hosts that ask for no ID, OffshoreDedi's 160 TB server cost $4.68/TB. Basalthold Hold 160 costs $3.50/TB.

### Is a price per TB quoted on raw or usable space?

Servers are priced on raw disk; cloud storage on usable space. Under RAIDZ2 on ten drives, multiply a server's raw price by 1.25 to compare it with B2 or Wasabi.

### Why do small storage servers cost more per TB?

Part of every price pays for the machine itself: processor, memory, chassis and port. Spread over more drives, that part shrinks. In the survey, the median fell from $9.50 at 16 TB to $4.68 at 144 TB.

### Can I buy storage per TB at Basalthold?

No. You rent a whole hold: Hold 24 $110.99, Hold 40 $201.09, Hold 100 $377.05, Hold 160 $561.39, per 30 days. Below about 30 TB of usable space, a storage box or B2 costs less.

### How was this survey done?

Basalthold read 23 sellers with a priced bare-metal plan of 16 TB or more on 2 November 2026. Only public pages were used, and no order was placed. Euro prices use 1 EUR = 1.1172 USD (ECB, 2026-10-30).
