What S3, Backblaze B2, Wasabi and Cloudflare R2 charge when your data leaves their network. Worked out for a 10 TB and a 100 TB restore, with what a flat-rate storage server changes.

**Quick answer — What are cloud storage egress fees, and how do I avoid them?**

Cloud storage egress fees are charges for data that leaves a provider's network, billed per GB downloaded. On 2 November 2026, Amazon S3 charged $0.09/GB for the first 10 TB a month, so a 10 TB restore cost $891. Flat-rate capacity avoids them: **Basalthold** storage servers include a monthly traffic allowance, from $110.99, crypto only, no KYC.

## What does each provider charge for egress (2 November 2026)?

| Attribute | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Amazon S3, US East | $0.09/GB for the first 10 TB of a month, $0.085 for the next 40 TB, $0.07 for the next 100 TB, $0.05 above 150 TB; the first 100 GB a month are free |
| Backblaze B2 | $6.95 per TB stored per 30 days; downloads free up to 3× your average stored data, then $0.01/GB |
| Wasabi | $7.99 per TB a month; no egress fee while monthly downloads stay at or below your stored data; 90-day minimum; 1 TB minimum charge |
| Cloudflare R2 | $0.015 per GB-month stored; no egress charge; write and read operations are billed |
| Hetzner Storage Box | Traffic listed as unlimited; $2.27 to $3.58 per TB a month; no crypto payment |
| Basalthold holds | Every server has a 1 Gbit/s port with a monthly traffic allowance (Hold 24 40 TB, Hold 40 60 TB, Hold 100 120 TB, Hold 160 200 TB), one dedicated IPv4 address and an IPv6 /64; going past the allowance never triggers an automatic bill |
| Uploads | AWS lists data transfer in from the internet at $0.000 per GB |

## What does it cost to download 10 TB or 100 TB?

Egress only, in US dollars, for one download in one month. Storage and request fees come on top.

| Provider | Download 10 TB | Download 100 TB | How it is worked out |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Amazon S3 (US East) | $891.00 | $7,812.20 | Free 100 GB first. 10 TB: 9,900 GB × $0.09. 100 TB: 10,240 GB × $0.09 + 40,960 GB × $0.085 + 48,700 GB × $0.07 |
| Backblaze B2, 100 TB stored | $0 | $0 | Free up to 3× the average stored data, here 300 TB; $0.01/GB beyond |
| Wasabi, 100 TB stored | $0 | $0 | Free while downloads stay at or below stored data; above that, on a regular basis, Wasabi can limit or suspend the service |
| Cloudflare R2 | $0 | $0 | No egress charge; storage costs $0.015 per GB-month |
| Basalthold Hold 100 | Included | Included | Allowance of 120 TB per 30 days on a 1 Gbit/s port; no automatic bill past it |

Decimal units: 1 TB = 1,000 GB. AWS tier limits are used as AWS lists them (10 TB = 10,240 GB, 50 TB = 51,200 GB). Prices from each provider's pricing page and the AWS Price List API, read on 2 November 2026.

## What is an egress fee, exactly?

An egress fee is a price per GB for data that leaves the provider's network for the internet.

Amazon S3 bills egress in tiers. In US East, the first 10 TB of a month cost $0.09/GB and the next 40 TB $0.085. The next 100 TB cost $0.07, and anything above 150 TB $0.05. The first 100 GB each month are free, counted across all AWS services.

Storage is cheap by comparison. S3 Standard costs $0.023 per GB-month for the first 50 TB, so 10 TB stored costs about $230 a month. Downloading those 10 TB once costs $891, almost four months of storage. The storage side for every provider at one capacity is on [the 100 TB cloud cost page](https://basalthold.com/100tb-cloud-storage-cost/ "How much it costs to store 100 TB in the cloud").

## Why do egress fees hit backups hardest?

Because you download a backup on the worst day: after a disk failure, a ransomware attack or a deleted bucket.

**You pay egress exactly when you need your data most.**

The same fee applies to restore tests and to a second copy kept elsewhere. A monthly 1 TB restore test from S3 costs $81 after the free 100 GB. Copying 50 TB out of S3 once costs $4,292.70. The offsite copy of a NAS raises the same question; see [offsite backup for a NAS](https://basalthold.com/offsite-backup-for-nas/ "What is the best offsite backup for a NAS?").

## Which providers charge no egress fee, and what is the catch?

Several providers drop the per-GB price, then set a rule somewhere else.

- **Backblaze B2** stores data at $6.95 per TB per 30 days. Downloads are free up to 3× your average stored data, then cost $0.01/GB. Downloads through many CDN and compute partners stay free beyond that.
- **Wasabi** charges $7.99 per TB a month with no egress or API fees. Its FAQ sets the limit: monthly downloads at or below your active storage. Objects deleted before 90 days are billed to day 90, and the minimum charge is 1 TB.
- **Cloudflare R2** has no egress charge at all. Storage costs $0.015 per GB-month, or $15 per TB.
- **Hetzner Storage Box** lists its traffic as unlimited, at $2.27 to $3.58 per TB a month. Hetzner takes no crypto.

Each model moves the cost: a higher storage price, a download ratio, a minimum term or request fees. The full bill side by side is on [our B2 and Wasabi comparison](https://basalthold.com/storage-server-vs-backblaze-b2-wasabi/ "Is a rented storage server cheaper than Backblaze B2 or Wasabi?").

## How does a rented storage server avoid egress fees?

It replaces the per-GB price with a port and a monthly allowance. You pay the same rent whether you download 1 TB or the whole array.

Every server has a 1 Gbit/s port with a monthly traffic allowance (Hold 24 40 TB, Hold 40 60 TB, Hold 100 120 TB, Hold 160 200 TB), one dedicated IPv4 address and an IPv6 /64; going past the allowance never triggers an automatic bill.

The port sets the real limit. A 1 Gbit/s link moves at most 125 MB/s, about 324 TB in 30 days in one direction. A full 100 TB restore takes about 9 days and 6 hours at line rate; 10 TB takes about 22 hours.

**A flat-rate server turns egress into a question of time, not money.**

Of 23 storage-server sellers Basalthold checked on 2 November 2026, 16 accepted crypto. At the no-KYC crypto hosts, a server of 16 TB or more cost a median $9.50 per raw TB a month. Basalthold Hold 160 works out at $3.50/TB and Hold 100 at $3.77/TB. The survey is on [the price-per-TB page](https://basalthold.com/storage-server-price-per-tb/ "How much a rented storage server costs per TB per month").

The trade-off is work. You build the array, run the software and keep a second copy: A storage server is not a backup of itself: we keep no copy of your data anywhere else, so a second copy in another place stays your job. An S3 endpoint on your own server is covered in [self-hosted S3 storage](https://basalthold.com/self-hosted-s3-storage/ "How to host S3-compatible object storage on a rented server").

## How can I cut egress fees if I stay in the cloud?

Plan the restore before the disaster, and price it.

- **Restore only what you lost.** restic, Borg and Proxmox Backup Server can restore single files or folders instead of the whole repository.
- **Keep a local copy.** Restore from it first, and use the cloud copy as the last resort.
- **Read the ratio.** B2 allows 3× your stored data for free; Wasabi allows 1×.
- **Do the sum.** Multiply your largest likely restore by the egress rate, and add it to the yearly storage cost.

## Which hold replaces a cloud bucket?

Each hold is a whole machine with its own drives and a fixed monthly traffic allowance. Longer terms and the three cities are on [the price list](https://basalthold.com/pricing/ "Basalthold storage server prices for 30 days, 3, 6 and 12 months").

| Plan | Quantity | 30 days | 3 months | 6 months | 1 year |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Hold 24 | 24 TB raw · 6 cores | $110.99 | $299.67 (−10%) | $532.75 (−20%) | $932.31 (−30%) |
| Hold 40 | 40 TB raw · 6 cores | $201.09 | $542.94 (−10%) | $965.23 (−20%) | $1,689.15 (−30%) |
| Hold 100 | 100 TB raw · 10 cores | $377.05 | $1,018.03 (−10%) | $1,809.84 (−20%) | $3,167.22 (−30%) |
| Hold 160 | 160 TB raw · 16 cores | $561.39 | $1,515.75 (−10%) | $2,694.67 (−20%) | $4,715.67 (−30%) |

In every plan: Blank data drives · Encryption keys stay yours · Dedicated IPv4 · No logs · No KYC · No setup fee

**Before you pay**

- Minimum top-up $25. Top up once in crypto, then buy any plan from your balance.
- Credit on your balance does not expire and renews any of your servers. When a top-up is only made to reach the minimum, the unspent part comes back on request within 30 days of payment, in USDT or USDC. The rest of a balance is not paid out unless the law requires it.
- Credited once your payment is checked on the blockchain. Typical network confirmation time: BTC ≈ 20 min · USDT TRC-20 ≈ 1 min · USDT ERC-20 ≈ 5 min · USDC ERC-20 ≈ 5 min · ETH ≈ 5 min · SOL ≈ 1 min · LTC ≈ 15 min

## What else do people ask about egress fees?

### Does Basalthold charge egress fees?

No. You pay one price per hold for 30 days or a longer term, and traffic is not billed per GB. Holds start at $110.99 per 30 days.

### Is uploading data to the cloud free?

Usually yes. AWS lists data transfer in from the internet at $0.000 per GB. The cost sits on the way out, plus request fees where a provider charges them, as Cloudflare R2 does.

### How much does it cost to restore 100 TB from Amazon S3?

About $7,812 in egress at US East rates read on 2 November 2026, after the free 100 GB. Storage and requests come on top. The same restore from B2 or Wasabi costs nothing in egress when you store at least as much as you download.

### How long does it take to download 100 TB from a rented server?

About 9 days and 6 hours at a full 1 Gbit/s, since the port moves at most 125 MB/s. Busy disks or a slow receiving end stretch that time. Every hold has a 1 Gbit/s port.

### Can I pay for a storage server with crypto and no KYC?

Yes. Basalthold takes BTC, USDT, USDC, ETH, SOL, LTC, with a minimum top-up of $25. No KYC: no ID, no selfie, no documents, no card and no phone number, at any point. Setup takes 72 hours at the most after your payment is confirmed.

**Store 100 TB without an egress bill** Hold 100: Intel Xeon Silver 4210R (10 cores / 20 threads), 128 GB DDR4 ECC, 10 × 10 TB hard drives (100 TB raw) plus 2 × 480 GB SSD for the system, mirrored, 1 Gbit/s port with 120 TB of traffic per 30 days, 1 IPv4 and an IPv6 /64, for $377.05/30 days. Same price in every city; crypto, no KYC.
